Hi! I'm Fernanda, a character animator and illustrator from Santiago, Chile and this is my blog! I graduated from the 3D Character Animation program at Animation Mentor, but I specialize in 2D as well (Actually I love it the most!). I also love making comics and hope to finish my graphic novel one day. Here you will find updates about my projects, sketches and animation stuff in general.

These where some concept sketches for my failed application for the Japic Tokyo Residency . I wasn’t selected, hope one day I can :(

The project was a short film in form of a semi-auto bio travelogue, but with a little llama as a main character.

From my short film “When I’m Scared…” // Watch it over here!

"When a young rabbit goes to his first job interview, he can’t help but feel completly scared. What will he do to get over it?"

This is part of the Travelogue I’m making from my trip to California, and is when I kinda vomit some of the thoughts I’ve had about success, dream jobs, life goals etc. It is kinda a big deal for me, because until a couple of months ago, I though that my life goal was to work for some kind of big studio, or that animating whatever would be enough for me (I’ve been thinking this since I was 13), and it’s not really true anymore, so it’s like for the first time in my life I’m lost about what I want to do with my carreer. Which the answer is probably animation but, WHAT in animation?

Oh, also, the Bill Waterson speech I’m talking about is the same that has been going around in comic form from Zen Pencils, but I read it before as this article http://www.brainpickings.org/index.php/2013/05/20/bill-watterson-1990-kenyon-speech/ is much complete also, so I can assure it’s a great read :)

When I’m Scared by Fernanda Frick

Oh, cool, thanks for sharing it :D!

"When a young rabbit goes to his first job interview, he can’t help but feel completly scared. What will he do to get over it?"

I made this short film as a personal project, it was supposed to be something simple I could finish in a month or two but in the end it took a lot longer to finish! I wanted to make a new short film with a simple story to focus on art and animation and around that time I came across Ze Frank’s song, and it inspired me to do something with it :)

You can buy Ze Frank’s song over here zefrank.bandcamp.com/track/scared !

This is the video I made for http://Playseeds.com :) An innovative app that lets gamers lend microloans to poor entrepreneurs.

"Players use real currency to make an in-game purchase that benefits them (such as a branded product or access to a new level) and benefits an entrepreneur in Africa. In return for their social investment, players are rewarded with loan interest in t he form of the in-game currency. Players can connect through the Seeds’ blogs and social media to talk more about the game and the loans."

This is one of my latest works, were I had to make an animated header for the website Playseeds.com, which is an app that is embeeded in games to give microloans to poor women and entrepreneurs in Africa and other countries. It’s a very cool concept and I was glad to help give it some life with these characters.

I looked to design a variety of women of different styles and sizes, to not establish how should a gamer “should look like”, because everyone can be one and enjoy games. I hope to have accomplished that :)

You can see the full header in action, along with a video that explains the app over at http://playseeds.com

These are some of the pages at my comic travel journal  about the keynote session in Siggraph. There were awesome directors like Pete Docter, Henry Selick, Chris Sanders, Kevin Lima, Kirk Wise, Ron Clemens, Eric Golberg, Mike Mitchell and David Silverman! If you want to check it out, you can watch it fully here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvTFJafIafM

One of the problems, was that it was a big ammount of directors and no women, but the presenter apologized saying that they tried but they were all busy. And that’s ok, but still, the ratio is so low,  I mean, the only women directors I know in BIG studios are Brenda Chapman and Yennifer Yuh Nelson and Jennifer Lee who is co-directing Frozen. I am missing someone? Would someone tell me why is this? Because it’s weird that with so many talented women in animation, so few rise up to be directors.I hope it’s a problem that changes with time.

California Travelogue: A journal comic about my trip to the USA →

I’ve been posting pages from the journal comics I drew in my trip to United States! Among the stuff in there, is the experiences of SDCC, Siggraph, Animation Mentor and other adventures in a country I had never been before.

I think they love each other very much.
Trying to achieve more atmoshpheric and cinematic stuff…still not there though, I want to practice this sort of thing more :,D

The comic journal sketchbook! It’s a japanese album moleskine so it looks fun like that. Still a lot to ink, and theres another regular sketchbook too, so lot’s of pages left.
You can read it at http://travelogue.fernandafrick.com !

Hi! I just came back from my 3 week US trip, and while I was there I sketched a travel journal with my experiences during the trip. I just uploaded the first 2 pages and will be updating it daily, and it will be pretty animation and comics intensive, since I went to Siggraph, Trickster, Comicon and to my Animation Mentor graduation. To make it somehow useful there will be some pages with notes I took in some of the lectures.

You can start reading it here!

Hope you like it!

A couple of background for my next short film :)
